Do you know what is in your toothpaste?

It’s hard to believe the toothpaste we use every day can be harmful to our health. The product that is supposed to maintain healthy gums and clean your teeth can hamper your overall health. Shockingly, many mass produced brands add chemicals in toothpaste. Many of them may contain carcinogens, allergens, irritants, and other toxic chemicals. Millions of people are exposed to health damaging chemicals unknowingly. So it is always good to know what you are putting in your mouth. And, knowing the toothpaste ingredients to avoid is wise.

Health implications of Fluoridated toothpastes

Its alarming that approximately 95% of conventional toothpastes sold in India contain fluoride. It is known to be effective in preventing tooth decay which is the reason of its popularity amongst toothpaste manufacturers and mass use. Fluoride is one chemical that you need to watch out for while choosing your toothpaste. The gradual degrading of the enamel (also referred to as Dental fluorosis) is common due to exposure to fluoride at a very young age. Hence, lesser exposure to children is advisable. Studies also show that too much intake of fluoride can lead to impairment in glucose metabolism, tooth discoloration, skin rashes and stomach problems. And, children unknowingly tend to swallow more fluoride than grown-ups.

Expert Dietician Jigna Sheth says, “Apart from dentifrices, exposure to fluoride occurs through dietary intake and fluoride supplements. Ingesting fluoride even for a short duration may lead to toxicity.”

Fluoride is not the lone culprit. Sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, carrageenan, propylene glycol, diethanolamine and microbeads are also present in conventional toothpastes making them really harmful. Even artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners added in toothpastes are bad on many counts, and children really suffer from their bad effects.

Toothpaste ingredients make a difference

While taking care of your teeth is a necessity its equally important to care about the ingredients in your toothpaste. A great alternative to conventional toothpastes could be using products made of herbal extracts and organic ingredients. Many studies show that dentifrices with herbal extracts are clinically proven to be safer than and more effective in comparison to conventional toothpastes. Natural products are good for the gums, while it also helps in controlling plaque, gingivitis and other dental issues. Spearmint and peppermint oils are natural antibacterial ingredients that can replace conventional toothpastes with health damaging chemicals.

With natural and organic toothpaste options, you don’t have to worry about any potentially harmful ingredients entering your body.  As these products are free of dyes it prevents children from developing delicate nervous symptoms making it the best choice for them. These toothpastes prevent from premature gum receding as its less abrasive. The excess toothpaste going down your drain leads to the ocean eventually polluting so many other living beings. The best part of choosing natural and organic toothpastes is that they are kinder to the environment.. It’s more sustainable to produce and makes it an ethical option for you. So you wake up with a good deed at the start of the day. Isn’t that cool?

Dr Rohan Virani, MDS (OMMFR), MIFL(GERMANY) says, “Continuous application of herbal toothpastes is highly effective in preventing dental problems and improving oral hygiene levels. However, it is important to read the labels carefully while purchasing herbal toothpastes to make sure that they contain only natural ingredients.”

It’s very important to do your research and to know what goes into your toothpaste before you use it. So the next time you pick up a toothpaste, do check the ingredients listed on the box. Cause what goes in your toothpaste also goes into your system. Henceforth, watch out for what goes in your mouth!
